Printed Custom Apparel: Printing Technologies For Sportswear and Casual Wardrobe
Printed custom apparel is in trend, whether it is professional sportswear, teamwear, or casual everyday clothes. In 2026, there are numerous printing technologies available, but how do you determine which one is best for your high-end streetwear brand or youth sports team?
This short guide will help you understand the basics of custom design printing and distinguish why one printing method is for high-specification sportswear/activewear and other methods are for daily comfort tees, hoodies, and caps.
Sportswear: Breathable and High-Performance Printing Solutions

Sportswear are high functional pieces, meant to support your body by providing stretch and wicking moisture. This is why, when working with sportswear or any high-performing garments, we can't just select any printing technology and call it a day. These garment pieces require customizations that won't reduce their serviceability.
One such example is polyester basketball jerseys. If we were to use screen printing, then not only would jerseys become less breathable, but also the designs would crack when jerseys stretch a little.
This is why sportswear clubs most of the time go for dye-sublimation printing, as it ensures the maximum airflow and long-lasting designs.
Printing technologies listed below are used for sportswear apparel:
- Dye-sublimation: Infuses ink with fabric, and even when sportswear is being stretched, nothing happens to printed designs.
- Vinyl Heat Transfer: A type of (HTV) called "Flex" is applied on, for player names and numbers. Flex heat transfers don't crack when stretched.
- Direct-to-Film: DTF printing is digital printing and quite flexible. It is used in darker colored sportswear; sublimation fails.
- 3D Silicone Printing: This method dispenses a liquid rubber onto garments and can be stretched along with fabrics, but these “Pro-Tier” uplifted prints are quite expensive.
Casual Collections: Durable and Stylish Printing Methods

Casual clothes, unlike sportswear, are not limited and have a wide variety of printing methods to choose from. Apparel such as graphic tees, hoodies, and joggers is easily customizable with almost any printing technique, as casual clothes have only two simple goals: comfort and style.
However, many startup streetwear brands prefer one method over another due to various factors such as cost, durability, time, and effectiveness.
The printing technologies are used for premium casual apparel:
- Direct-to-Film: DTF offers versatile and vibrant designs. This method works for cotton and polyester daily wear apparel.
- Screen Printing: Screen printing is perfect for casual tees and lightweight hoodies. Many brands opt for it due to cost-effectiveness when working with large volumes.
- Direct-to-Garments: DTG printing is excellent for detailed designs and prints directly onto the garments, providing a soft hand feel.
- Sublimation Printing: Sublimation is not just for athletic apparel, but also for casual leisure clothes. Brands and companies choose sublimation due to its durability and vibrancy.
- Heat Transfer Vinyl: A cost-effective method to customize denim and t-shirts. It provides long-lasting and durable prints for everyday apparel.
