The Ultimate Guide to Sublimation Printing in Sportswear

By Admin Team | March 17, 2026

If you've ever wondered how professional sports teams get those incredibly vibrant, complex, and unpeelable designs on their jerseys, the answer is Sublimation Printing.

Unlike traditional screen printing or heat transfers, sublimation is a chemical process where heat and pressure convert solid dye particles directly into a gas, bonding them permanently with the polyester fibers of the fabric. At MESA Sportswear, sublimation is one of our core specialties.

Why Sublimation is King for Activewear

  • Zero Weight Added: The ink becomes part of the fabric. There is no heavy, rubbery feel on the chest like with screen printing.
  • Maximum Breathability: Because the pores of the fabric are not blocked by ink layers, sweat can evaporate naturally. This is crucial for soccer, basketball, and running gear.
  • Infinite Colors & Gradients: You can print photo-realistic images, complex camouflage, gradients, and unlimited logos without any extra setup costs per color.
  • Indestructible Durability: The design will never crack, peel, or fade. It lasts exactly as long as the garment itself.

The Sublimation Process Explained

First, your custom design is printed onto special transfer paper using specialized sublimation inks. Next, the printed paper is aligned with blank polyester fabric panels. The panels and paper are fed through a large industrial heat press at around 400°F (200°C). The heat opens the pores of the polyester, and the ink turns into gas, dyeing the fabric instantly.

After the fabric cools, the panels are cut and expertly sewn together by our artisans at MESA. This "cut-and-sew" sublimation process ensures the design goes edge-to-edge flawlessly.
